August 2010: Study Shows Greater Link Between Mold and Asthma

Indoor Environment Connections: A study by Harvard researchers says there is a more definite link than previously thought between mold in the home and the risk of severe asthma.

The study, which was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, concluded that individuals with certain genes were more likely to suffer serious asthma attacks in homes with high amounts of mold.

The researchers studied data from the Childhood Asthma Management Program, looking at children ages 5 to 12 with moderate to persistent asthma. They found 395 children and their parents who had certain expressions of chitinases, which are enzymes that break down the cell wall of fungus known as chitin.

Researchers at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) have made an energy storage breakthrough that could transform solar power from an alternative energy source to a conventional source. The university is calling the solar project a major advancement in energy research.

Sunlight has the greatest potential of any power source to solve the world's energy problems. In one hour, enough sunlight strikes the Earth to provide the entire planet's energy needs for one year. The problem, however, is how best to harness that energy. The research at MIT is a significant move forward in generating clean, carbon-free energy on a massive scale.

Geothermal energy comes from the heat in the Earth's core. The heat is used to evaporate a liquid which goes through turbines as it rises, generating electricity.
