  • PowerBees Incorporated was contacted to perform a microbial analysis of an apartment unit in West Palm Beach, Florida. The tenant had been traveling for 4 weeks, over which time the air conditioning unit had stopped functioning and had developed a small leak.  Upon returning, the tenant noticed a musty odor eminating from the areas of water stained drywall, but chose to ignore it. Over a period of a few weeks, the tenant began experiencing and increase in allergy symptoms, including itchy eyes, sore throat, and a persistant cough. This West Palm Beach resident expressed concern that mold may have resulted from the humidity in the apartment while the air conditioner was not operational. PowerBees took an air sample from the area where the water damage had occured. Upon receiving the results, it was discovered that the unit had extremely high concentrations of penicillium/aspergillus spores, which can cause an increase in resperatory allergy symptoms and may lead to pulmonary infection. The tenant was pleased to know the reason behind his sudden increase in symptoms, and has moved forward in beginning remediation.

  • Massive flooding and a mold problem recently occurred at a residential property in Dover, MA. PowerBees was contacted to perform a mold inspection and create a remediation procedure to remove any visible or hidden mold.  The basement was flooded with approximately 800 gallons of water during the March rains.  The water came in through the foundation walls.  The water went from the unfinished side of the basement beneath a wall separating the unfinished section from the finished section and saturated the carpet / carpet pad in the finished section.  Microbial growth was visible on the sheetrock. Moisture readings, measured with a Delmhorst Moisture Meter, were high in the sheetrock in the finished section.  Humidity was measured at higher than normal.  To remediate the property PowerBees recommended installing HEPA air scrubbers in the basement as well as several dehumidifiers.  All the affected baseboard and sheetrock should be removed.  Additional HEPA vacuuming and treatment with an antimicrobial should also be done in order to insure all the mold is removed.  Additional mold testing should also be done at the end of the project.
